When Should We Replace the Table Tennis Racket Rubber?

It’s important to regularly replace your racket’s rubber. Like any equipment, racket rubber has a limited lifespan and can’t be used forever.

When Is the Right Time to Change the Racket Rubber?

The best time to replace your racket rubber depends on how often you play and the intensity of your practice. The more frequently you play and the harder you train, the faster the rubber will wear out. Even if you don't play regularly, the rubber will naturally degrade over time.

General Guidelines for Replacing Racket Rubber:

  • For an average of 1–2 hours of practice per day: replace the rubber every 3–4 months.

  • For an average of 2–3 hours of practice per day: replace the rubber every 2–3 months.

  • For an average of 3–4 hours of practice per day: replace the rubber every 1–2 months.

How to Identify When the Rubber Needs Replacement:

  • Pimpled-in rubber: If the surface shows white marks, becomes shiny, or the pimples underneath are visible, it’s hard to create spin, meaning it's time to replace it.

  • Pimpled rubber (offensive/defensive): When the pimples are about to break, the surface changes color, or the rubber loses its bounce and spin, it's a sign of wear.

Tips for Removing and Gluing New Rubber

  1. Removing the old rubber: Start by removing the edge tape around the racket.

  2. Carefully peel off the rubber: Do this slowly along a diagonal. Ripping it off too quickly or forcefully can tear the rubber or scratch the wood. Handle it with care.

  3. Cleaning the blade: Use any excess rubber to remove old glue residue. If old glue remains on the blade, the new rubber may not stick properly, leading to bumps or uneven adhesion.
